Never Let Go
When the light dims,
When the wave hits,
When the sky thunders,
Never let go.
When the sounds fade,
When the show ends,
When the curtain falls,
Never let go.
For somewhere out there,
A voice echoes,
And there it our hearts,
Songs of faith are born.

In my About Love blogpost, I mentioned how I fell in love with God and that's why I wouldn't shy away from talking to people about my faith. This post is sort of a continuation of that talk. A few days ago, I decided to read through Acts again. And this time, Acts 5:17-42 really spoke to me. The passage narrates the time when the apostles were persecuted, and despite the suffering being painful, they never once turned away or chose something else rather than Jesus. In fact, they never stopped and continued to proclaim the good news that Jesus is the Christ!
Gamaliel, a Pharisee, made a very important point. There had been people before Jesus who claimed to be the messiah (the chosen one), but once they died, those who followed them dispersed. This, however, never was the case for the apostles. They gathered together and were active in sharing their faith, and even to the point that they would endure being flogged. Gamaliel says, 'But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.' - Acts 5:39 (NIV)
The apostles set themselves apart in the way they responded. There's no doubt that they experienced something extraordinary, otherwise why would they put their desires to share the good news before their lives? Their zeal and ardency showcased just how much they had been impacted by all the events, from Jesus dying on the cross to Him raising from the dead and the Holy Spirit coming upon people.
This reminds us of how special it is to have faith. It's like a treasure box. When you realise what's in it, you would never let it go. Knowing Jesus is very much discovering a treasure. Some time ago a friend asked me to describe why I believe in Jesus, and I simply put it, 'I met Him, and now I could never let Him go.' It's such a simple statement and yet profound. To most people, Jesus could just be an imaginary friend. But to believers, we know Jesus is much more than a mere imagination. We know He is alive, and each day we connote to encounter His goodness. That's why we endeavour to share His good news with the world in all ways possible, embodying that love, that light, that hope.
Jesus did the extraordinary - let's never forget that. So, if you ever come to a place where you feel like things (such as callings) aren't working out the way you expected, then remember this story of the apostles. They never let go, despite the hardships even if it meant being martyred. And lastly, always put God first.
Peace be with you.
