Embracing the New Year

Did you think that Christmas post was the last one of the year? Well, I did, and I'm the one who writes them! You see, I realised that it's just not very me to not slip in some last words before 2016 ends, so I decided to write one more. (Actually, the thing is: the number thirteen is not really considered as auspicious, so I'm writing this one to make it 14 posts for the year 2016 - but of course you never heard me say that). All joking aside, I do have some good thoughts to share.

Every time when it comes to a new year, people have this thing called New Year's resolution. People get excited and set these amazing (and sometimes unachievable) goals. And half way through the first month, all that positivity for making a change in one's life starts failing. Then, by the middle of the year, we'll hear, 'yeah, will do that next year.' (This may be a slight exaggeration.) Of course, a lot, both unforeseen and expected, happens in one year, so we can't really blame that things turn out the way they did. But that's beside my point. What I am trying to say here is that whatever happens in this new year, don't be despaired - surround yourself with good people and things that matter more (things that last beyond this physical world).

If you fall, get up and dust off your shoulders. If you trip, laugh it off. Nothing is set in stone, unless you're determined enough to make every disappointment and failure run deep into your veins. Of course, these are not easy to do, especially when some circumstances make us not want to get out of bed. And this brings me back to 'surround yourself with good people' - good friends and family are there to help if you'll allow them. Don't ever feel that you have to do it alone, though I understand that some pain cannot be easily articulated or shared - but even then, you don't have to explain what you're going through and the simple request of 'can you please pray for me?' should suffice. Above all, God is always there with you, even though He may seem silent at times. Remember that poem about the footprints in the sand? How there was only one set of footprints in the sand when the man was going through the toughest moments of his life, only to learn that it was because God was carrying him on His back? Just because we can't feel it or understand it doesn't justify our reasoning as accurate, for we can be too blinded by our pain to see the reality of things.

So, whatever 2017 pans out to be - embrace it! If you have changes that you'd like to make towards your life, even when it's two months before the end of the year, then make the move! Any time is a good time to start, and a baby step is better than nothing at all. If there is nothing you're meant to do, then sit back and take pleasure in the simple things of life. If life were to go through more valleys than mountaintops, then take some time to grieve (it's okay!) but also turn to a close friend or a family member. Most of all, be in communion with God daily - keep your focus on Him and Him only. Then, this (picture on left) could be us in 2017, and by that I don't mean physically being there, but in the mental state of peace and rest. That is the best place to be in!

That's all from me for 2016. Happy New Year, everyone!
